Tang Contemporary Art is proud to announce the opening of the exhibition “Qin Qi.” The show will present the work of artist Qin Qi, curated by Cui Cancan,from May 27 to July 23, 2017. After more than a year of research and discussions with the artist, the curator extracted two threads from Qin Qi’s work spanning 2010 to 2017.Cui chose more than forty works centered on these themes, which will be exhibited across both Tang Contemporary Art Beijing spaces. The two parts complement and echo one another; one cannot exist without the other. This exhibition is Qin Qi’s largest and most important solo show to date.
Since Qin Qi emerged in the art world in 2002, he has created work that both negates and advances ideas and styles, forging a distinctive path for himself within a new generation of painting. He began with erotic images and allegorical narratives in early 2000, then in2004, he shifted toward pictorial experiments in painting. Later, he moved away from the event-driven and unfinished qualities of these images and engaged with a consciousness of form and structure, and developed weight, brushstrokes, and vision in his images.In 2010, Qin Qi held a large solo exhibition at the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, entitled “Chairs Can Save Lives.” The show was well-received, and it became emblematic of a new mode of painting.

Cui Cancan is an independent curator in China, he has won Chinese Contemporary Art Award Critic Award, Yi Shu Award for Critical Writing etc., curated main exhibitions like Hei Qiao Night Way (2013), Xiang Cun Xi jian Chui (2013), FUCKOFF II (2013), Unlived by What is Seen (2014), Between the 5th and 6th Ring Road in Beijing (2015), The Decameron (2016), Curated solo exhibitions like Ai Weiwei, Xia Xiaowan, Shen Shaomin, Wang Qingsong, He Yunchang, Xiao Yu, Qin Ga, Xie Nanxing, Shi Jinsong, Li Zhanyang, Xu Zhongmin, Ma Ke, Xia xing, Zhao Zhao, Li Qing, Chen Yufan, Chen Yujun, Li Binyuan, Feng Lin, Zhang Yue, Zong Ning, Jiang Bo etc.

As a significant artist born in 1970s, Qin Qi’s practice in painting is distinctly representative. It’s resulted from his spirits of skepticism and introspection, which also makes his works of great variety and extensiveness of themes and content. Qin Qi is not an artist that easy to be defined by any kind of artistic styles and characteristics. However, maybe in a way, this variability is just his distinction.
