WANG YUYANG

b.1979  Harbin, China

Wang Yuyang was born in the Heilongjiang province, China, in 1979. He graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts with an MA in 2008 and currently teaches in the Department of Experimental Art. Wang Yuyang is one of the most accomplished Chinese artists of his generation, whose multi-medial practice encompasses sculpture, painting, photography and video. At the heart of Wang’s oeuvre is the question of how technology – both cutting-edge and obsolete – affects and challenges our perception of everyday life. Many of his works incorporate modern technology, such as motors, lights and electricity, but reference traditional Chinese philosophy; both ancient, contemporary and historical. Wang Yuyang questions the experience of technology – that is, our interactions with the digital and the robotic – while utilizing everyday objects to create the illusion of futurism.

Wang Yuyang’s work was the subject of the solo show One Painting, CAFA Art Museum, Beijing, China (2009). He has also exhibited in major museum group shows, including Thingworld – International Triennial of New Media Art, National Art Museum of China, Beijing, China (2014); ON/OFF: China’s Young Artists in Concept & Practice, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China (2013) etc.

As one of the few artists who engage in multi-media and various practices, Wang's works, which include installation, photography, moving image and painting, is not without strong critical takes. In his previous projects, such as Moon-landing Program, Artificial Moon, Dust is Dust, Breath Series and A Painting series, Wang objectified the entities by spectacles deriving from mockery and humor, which aimed to investigate and represent the relationship among human bodies, experiences and perceptions. His works also try to discuss the logic connection among artificial reality, media, historical recognition and body identification.
