The exhibition “The Realm of Vision” brings together the creative practices of artists Zhao Peizhi, Zhang Jian, and Yafeng Duan, who each explore the dual structure of perception and feedback through their unique artistic languages. This exploration not only pertains to the perception and representation of the external world but also points to the introspection and reshaping within the subject. In their works, some reconstruct and appropriate faces and cultural symbols to provoke new understandings of identity and the other; others interweave natural landscapes and human scenes on canvas, creating a visual experience that is both profound and intense; or they guide the empirical world toward a transcendent perceptual dimension, where the subtle interplay of light, shadow, and colour generates a vibrant, evocative resonance.

Three artists intertwine the flow of history with individual memory, creating unique paintings that present the complex and dynamic symbiotic relationship between perceived memory and environmental existence, as shaped by distinct creative individuals. Zhao Peizhi’s work focuses on depicting everyday figures and scenes, transcending mere physical representation. He emphasizes the emotional sedimentation of individual memory and social concerns within the canvas, capturing seemingly trivial yet vibrantly alive moments with simple and sincere brushstrokes. In his paintings, figures are not only microcosms of social reality but also bearers of inner monologues. Through a focused gaze on details and an infusion of emotion, he extends fleeting experiences into visually profound narratives. His creations reflect a deep respect for humanity and nature, eschewing extravagance and clamour to present a rich and restrained humanistic spirit.

In this highly digitized and fragmented era, Zhao Peizhi records overlooked moments of life with a calm and delicate approach, while Zhang Jian explores the ordinary through depictions of surrounding landscapes. They imbue the everyday with a power that transcends its ordinariness, enabling viewers to reexamine familiar landscapes and faces, thus touching deeper emotional resonances and social concerns. Tracing Zhang Jian’s creative trajectory, he consistently engages with natural and urban landscapes, from his early “Courtyard Scenes” to his later “Journey Landscapes,” demonstrating an ongoing focus on the conditions of existence and the realities of the environment. In his works, everyday scenes—courtyards, tree-lined paths, street corners—seem to undergo multiple layers of time’s application, coverage, and re-presentation, transcending simple depiction to become vessels of emotion and memory. He does not over-explain his paintings but, through pure depiction, allows the landscapes to carry the flow of emotions and the sedimentation of time, rendering familiar scenes both estranged and imbued with tension.

Moments of life may be concrete—a passing face, a fleeting landscape—or abstract—a beam of light, a ripple’s spread. Yafeng Duan’s creations resemble colours that grow and spread organically on the canvas, ultimately coalescing into a visual “breath.” Her pictorial language is deeply influenced by the Chinese philosophical concept of “qi” (vital energy), blended with aesthetic experiences from her studies in Europe, resulting in works that exude a unique sense of space and material texture. Duan does not aim to reproduce the appearance of nature but creates a spiritual space for lingering and contemplation, where time and space transcend physical dimensions, transforming into an extension of inner experience and a flow of perception.

In the works displayed at this exhibition, the artists’ creations are not only a condensation of geographical spaces and a mapping of spiritual dwelling but also a visualized “spiritual breath,” highlighting the unique power of painting as a medium for thought and perception. Through their depictions of natural and humanistic scenes, they weave individual memory, social concerns, and inner experiences onto the canvas, revealing the multifaceted possibilities of painting—it is both a solidification of memory and an extension of time, as well as a re-examination of overlooked moments. This is precisely the deep connection between the real world and the individual realm emphasized by “The Place of Seeing.” In this sense, their works not only redefine the visual expression of landscapes and figures but also reaffirm the profound power of painting as a vehicle for thought and emotion.

Yafeng Duan

b 1973, Hebei, China
Lives and works in Berlin, Germany

From a young age, Yafeng Duan studied traditional Chinese painting under her father’s guidance, mastering both freehand brushwork and meticulous gongbi techniques. She later attended the Chinese Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 2004, she pursued further studies in Germany, graduating from the Bauhaus University, and now primarily focuses on abstract painting.

Yafeng Duan’s artistic roots are grounded in traditional Chinese painting, but her creative language matured in Germany. Within a cross-cultural artistic environment, she deconstructs and reconstructs her personal style, drawing inspiration from artists such as Albert Oehlen, William Turner, Mark Rothko, and Gotthard Graubner. She excels in large-scale paintings, characterized by profound spatial depth, rich atmospheres, and a distinctive personal style that blends the fluidity of Eastern aesthetics with the structural qualities of Western art.

Duan places particular emphasis on the spontaneity of the painting process and the natural interaction between materials. She skillfullyintegrates Chinese painting techniques—such as stippling, dyeing, texturing, rubbing, and ink splashing—with modern media, creating ethereal, translucent, and dynamic compositions. By employing tools like scrapers, rinsing techniques, water stains, and diffusion, she intervenes in the canvas, allowing textures to emerge through layers of construction and destruction. Her works evoke natural phenomena such as clouds, cracks, and ripples, offering a rich visual experience.

Her art navigates the boundary between figuration and abstraction, avoiding deliberate representation while evoking multifaceted associations with nature, life, and the flow of energy. Duan’s paintings are not only experiments in visual language but also poetic responses to her perceptions of nature and spirituality.

Zhang Jian

b. 1968, Beijing, China
Currently living and working in Beijing

Zhang Jian was graduated from the Mural Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1993. He has held solo exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and various countries including South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Germany. He has also participated in international group exhibitions at institutions such as the Asian Art Museum, the Louis B. Rosenberg Foundation, and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum.

Zhang’s work is deeply influenced by Impressionism, particularly by artists like Manet and Chéret. He was initially fascinated by depicting light and outdoor themes, presenting a pure, introspective, and tranquil depiction of everyday life in his paintings. After 2000, Zhang transitioned from Impressionism to creating works based on photographs, focusing on large areas of flat color. His blurred treatment evokes comparisons to Gerhard Richter. Public spaces imbued with collective memory and special symbolism have become common landscapes in Zhang’s works. In recent years, his creations have become more subjective, free, and expressive, merging reality and dreams in an abstract manner. Through fluid and fresh brushwork, he has rediscovered a dialogue with the world that resonates deeply within him.

His solo exhibitions include: Over the Garden Wall, Blue Shore Gallery, Shenzhen, 2024; Zhang Jian: Seeking Light, Yulan Tang, Beijing, 2022; Zhang Jian: Seeking, Safe Haven Gallery, Hong Kong, 2020; Park: Exhibition of Works by Zhang Jian, Extraordinary Arts, Beijing, 2019; There is Always a Tranquil Landscape, Pienfang New Art Space, Beijing, 2017; Stillness, iPRECIATION, Singapore, 2013, among others.

Zhao Peizhi

b. 1971, Xinjiang, China
Lives and works in Beijing

Zhao Peizhi was graduated in 1995 from the Fine Arts Department of Xinjiang Normal University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 2004, he furthered his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Zhao has gained wide recognition in the industry for his paintings of Xinjiang figures and has established his position and influence in the art world by winning the Gold Award at the 11th National Fine Arts Exhibition.

In recent years, Zhao's figure paintings have shown a tendency to return to traditional forms, featuring flat compositions, extremely simplified lines and clothing, and naive character depictions. Particularly in his new works from the last two years, he has been exploring themes beyond Xinjiang, depicting people from surrounding areas and different regions. Zhao's themes often focus on figures, landscapes, and everyday life, with a realistic style that is rich in emotional tension. His work gradually simplifies figures and compositions, emphasizing the flat expression of color, especially in smaller pieces where he explores and expresses overall colorblocks. Zhao's works are based on a profound understanding and feeling of his everyday life, capturing the human heart through his keen brushwork.

His works have participated in numerous national art exhibitions and have won the Gold Award at the 11th National Fine Arts Exhibition, the Silver Award at the 12th National Fine Arts Exhibition, and an Excellence Award at the 3rd National Youth Art Exhibition. His works are collected by art institutions, including the China Art Museum.
